World Children’s Choir - Performing Arts at the Heart of Literacy Program

The Performing Arts at the Heart of Literacy Program is sponsored by the World Children's Choir and Fairfax Partnership for Youth in cooperation with Culmore Family Resource Center, Fairfax Department of Family Services, Fairfax Department of Community and Recreation Services, and Olde Salem Village.

This program has been designed and implemented for children and teens from financially disadvantaged families.

 

PAHLP Activities:

  • One Saturday morning session each month with WCC Bella Voce,
    Concert Choir, Junior Choir and Friends Chorus ensembles includes singing, drumming, and dancing; 

  • Other Saturdays: 
    Phase One - singing, West African drumming and dancing, and Broadway show tune choreography.
    Phase Two - add peace games, peace collage, drama, dance, arts and crafts, conflict resolution training 

  • Tuesday and Thursday evening rehearsals before season concerts; 

  • Perform in four season concerts (December x 2, March, May) 

  • Four weekly West African Drumming and Dancing rehearsals late May - early June; 

  • West African Cultural Concert in June 

PAHLP Song Repertoire: International folk songs, environmental and peace songs, and Broadway show tunes

The Performing Arts at the Heart of Literacy Program Involves parents!

Would you like to:

  • Help your child to make better grades?
    Students will develop concentration, discipline, commitment, and listening skills that will help them at school

  • Provide your child opportunities to make new friends, experience fun, joy, satisfaction, and gain confidence while learning to sing, drum, dance, and act?
    Confidence gained in rehearsals and performances carries over into all aspects of the student's life, contributing to mental wellness and life success.

 

 

Program requirements:

  1. The program is for children and teens of income eligible families. Refer to the guidelines.

  2. Children and teens agree to attend rehearsals and participate in performances to which they are invited.

  3. Parents agree to volunteer as chaperones or in other duties as their schedules allow.

How to apply:

  1. Use the income guidelines chart to pre-qualify your family.

  2. Bring your child to a rehearsal.

  3. Pick up enrollment materials at rehearsal, complete, and give to the teacher.

Timeline for Phase One weekly rehearsals on Saturdays 

  • 8:45 AM - 10:45 AM Singing, drumming, and dancing rehearsals for children ages 4 - 7

  • 10:45 AM - 11:15 AM Break

  • 11:15 AM - 12:30 PM Singing, drumming, and dancing rehearsals for children ages 8 - 16*
    *older students accepted with permission of the artistic director

  • 8:15 AM - 9:10 AM West African Drumming and Dancing 

  • 9:15 AM - 9:45 AM Singing Rehearsal for PAHLP students, WCC singers and adult singers

  • 9:45 AM - 10:00 AM Break

  • 10:00 AM - 10:45 AM Singing Rehearsal for PAHLP students and WCC singers

  • 10:45 AM - 11:00 AM Break (children age 4 - 7 leave) 

  • 11:00 AM - 1:30 PM Singing Rehearsal for PAHLP students with Bella Voce and Concert Choir singers
