York; Washington, D.C. Holiday Concert is This Saturday (December 20, 2008) The World Children's Choir brought their message of hope, peace and world friendship to New York City and helped raise over $5,000 for Mission Schools International, which is building educational facilities in Rwanda. The "Holiday Concert Extravaganza" was held at the Baruch Performing Arts Center on Saturday, and featured five solo artists from the New York City area, including WCC alum Isabelle Halphen. Ms. Halphen and Sondra Harnes, WCC artistic director, gave a surprise performance of 'Sull'aria from Le Nozze di Figaro by Mozart. Ms. Halpen studied voice with Ms. Harnes when she was a member of the World Children's Choir. The Choir sang a wide range of traditional carols, popular Christmas tunes and international selections, including songs in eight different languages. Washington audiences can enjoy the same music this Saturday, December 20 at the Choir's annual Holiday Concert and Sing-Along at 7:00 p.m. at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Arlington (4250 N. Glebe Road). Tickets are $20 for adults, seniors and students 12 and up, $15, children 11 and under $10. To order tickets: 703-883-0920, visit our on-line concert ticket order form, or email info@worldchildrenschoir.org. The World Children's Choir serves as a voice for children worldwide - giving voice to the interests of all children, celebrating cultural diversity through music, promoting positive international relations, and asking people to work together to create a peaceful, healthy world for children. Through singing, WCC members explore musical content, and use music, art, and special activities to mediate cross-cultural differences and become peacemakers. The children learn how music and art express emotion, create shared experiences, bridge differences, tell stories, produce beauty and enrich others. In the past year, the Choir has sung at the America's Promise Alliance awards dinner at the White House with 'American Idol' finalist Melinda Doolittle, at Wolf Trap, and at numerous other venues with prestigious orchestras and other musicians.
